Ten debutant writers have won the First Chapter 2026 – the ELF Seddiqi Writers’ Fellowship at this year’s Emirates Airline Festival of Literature. The mentorship programme could be a first step towards them clinching a publishing deal too.
Several emerging writers were announced as winners in different categories of the prestigious MBRSC Short Story Award: ‘New Voices in Sci-Fi’ at the 2026 Emirates Airline Festival of Literature. Five participants got a special mention as well.
Presented by the Emirates Literature Foundation in collaboration with the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), the award challenged aspiring authors to craft original and thought-provoking science fiction stories exploring themes such as space exploration, time travel, advanced technology and futuristic civilisations.
A total of 50 youth from 10 Arab countries are participating in the latest phase of the Arab Youth Hackathon – Gaming Edition launched by the Arab Youth Center and being hosted at the headquarters of AD Gaming in Abu Dhabi. The programme will lead up to a final showcase at the World Government Summit in Dubai in February 2026.

Dubai: The Dubai Future Foundation (DFF) has announced its support for 26 research projects led by 14 universities and academic institutions in Dubai, marking the conclusion of the second cycle of Dubai Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Grant Initiative.
The funded projects were selected from a total of 358 submissions received from universities and research institutions across Dubai. Following a multi-stage evaluation process, 73 projects advanced to the final stage, after which the top projects were awarded funding of up to AED 1.5 million each.
Schools, universities and educational universities in Dubai have been invited to join an initiative to plant 20,000 trees across the city to mark the 20th anniversary of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, assuming leadership of Dubai.
A total of 77 highly trained cadets officially earned their wings to fly as they successfully graduated from the Emirates Flight Training Academy (EFTA) at their glittering sixth graduation ceremony following months of rigorous training in December 2025.
Schools in Dubai will finish earlier on Fridays starting January 9, 2026, following a nationwide adjustment to Friday prayer schedules, according to the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA).
In a statement, the KHDA said the change aligns with the new Friday prayer time of 12.45pm and comes after consultations with educational institutions across the emirate.
